Southern Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii)
The Southern Slash Pine, an evergreen native tree that can grow 75-100 feet tall with a 3-4 feet diameter trunk, is most often used as a shade and landscape tree. It produces cones and dark green needle foliage. The pine seeds from the cones attract squirrels and wild turkeys. The tree grows in wet flatwoods and swampy areas as well as in sandy soil. It prefers full sun. The name “Slash” comes from the method used to extract resin from the trees.
