Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis)
The Hibiscus, which is available in a variety of colors, is among the most popular tropical plant in Florida. It is believed to be native to China and then brought to Florida via the South Pacific and Hawaii. Its flowers, which last for one day, bloom early morning and wilt late afternoon. The plants can range from low-growing shrub forms to upright trees growing to 20 feet. It can be planted as an informal screen or hedge, a foundation plant, or an accent. The plant is susceptible to frost and direct salt spray and prefers direct sunlight for at least half of the day. Pruning to maintain size and shape is best done in the early spring.
